I’m proud to announce the availability of Accelerometer-based Gestures, and Screen Orientation Alpha 2 for Openmoko Neo Freerunner. It has been an amazing run for me (GSoC 2008).
This release includes:
- An application with user interface that allows the user to train the gestures for himself/herself;

- A listener daemon that sends a notification on the screen of the recognized gesture;

- Automatically switch of screen orientation to the four possible modes (2xportrait, and 2xlandscape).
- And a lot of hard work.
What will be done in the next release:
- Integration with the Openmoko Framework (already in progress);
- User will be able to associate gestures with desired actions (as soon as the Openmoko Framework matures);
- Less CPU usage; it now constantly eats up 18-20% of CPU (400 Mhz). We’re already using logarithms, so moving from floating point operations to fixed point should be doable.
- Rethinking of some gestures, which are pretty odd to make in public.
How to install (the quick way):
SSH Neo:
wget http://accelges.googlecode.com/files/accelges_0.1.0-svnr204-r2_armv4t.ip...
opkg install accelges_0.1.0-svnr204-r2_armv4t.ipk
On the Neo (don’t use SSH here, as screen orientation won’t work if you do use SSH here):
/etc/init.d/gesl start
Now make a gesture, and turn your Neo up-side-down!
